To do sourcing right in China is not easy. For a small or midsized international company seeking to outsource a relatively small quantity of non-commodity products, it often seems to be a "mission impossible" to find and retain a reliable Chinese supplier that is capable of consistently manufacturing and shipping products per specs and on schedule. The difficulty here is two-fold. First, the small order quantity (i.e. less than $10 MM per annum) makes it economically unviable for a company to set up a permanent sourcing unit in China . Second, the non-commodity nature of the product (i.e. products that are neither raw materials nor low end simple consumer products) prohibits the company from conducting business through a 3-rd party trading company (located either in China/Hong Kong or the international company's home country).
